BMW has announced the pricing structure and model line-up for its new 1-Series. The only rear-wheel drive vehicle in its class, this will start at 16,690$ on the road and be available with a choice of four engines and three spec levels.
One of the things I used to admire about BMW was the focus shown by its designers and engineers. They were the snipers of the car industry, lying in wait while the enemy blundered about with smoking tanks and faulty machineguns, and then, boomf, delivering a killer shot that never missed.
The 1-series cars will be the ruination of the BMW brand. Of that I have no doubt. But at the moment, despite the lost vision and the appointment of Bangle, that ruination has not yet got into its stride. For now you can still buy a Beemer and survive the experience with your dignity intact. The question is, should you? And to answer that, we have to work out if the 1-series is any good.
The BMW 1 Series is designed to give the BMW brand wider appeal. It goes head-to-head with the Volkswagen Golf, Audi A3 Sportback and Alfa Romeo 147 as a compact executive car. But style and class have never come cheap.
What is it?
The 1-Series is the first BMW range to be launched in opposition to the VW Golf,
although it will be a premium alternative rather than a direct rival. It maintains
the BMW
tradition of rear-wheel drive, and develops the sculpted look of all recent
BMW designs.
All models will be fitted with remote central locking, twin front, front side and front head airbags, Dynamic Stability and Traction Control, run-flat tyres, electric front windows and a CD stereo. The SE model gives you air-con, multi-function leather steering wheel, rear parking sensors, front fogs and 16-inch alloys, while Sport adds sports seats, suspension and steering wheel.
Options include sat-nav and iDrive, leather upholstery, front parking sensors and xenon headlights, as well as a Comfort Package offering rain-sensing wipers, cup holders, front armrest, auto-dimming mirrors and rear parking sensors. Further down the line, keyless entry, uprated sat-nav and Extended Voice Control will also become available.
At the oily end of the car,
your choice is between two petrol and two diesel engines. Entry-level 116i models
are powered by a 1.6-litre unit mated to a five-speed manual gearbox; max power
of 115bhp means a top speed of 125mph and 0-62mph time of 10.8 seconds, while
a more conservative approach to the use of your right foot will be worth 37.7mpg
on the combined cycle.

All models get six-speed gearbox (five-speed on 116i); six airbags; brake force display; run-flat tyres with tyre puncture warning system; aluminium front suspension; five link rear suspension; on-board computer; ISOFIX child seat fixings and CD player. SE adds: 16" alloy wheels; automatic climate control; front arm rest; front fog lamps; interior auto dimming mirror; three-spoke leather sports multifunction steering wheel; lights package and rear park distance control. Buyers of Sport specification get in addition to SE spec Black Gomera interior trim; colour coded exterior body parts; front fog lamps; sports seats (in Motion cloth / Sensatec) and sports suspension. Options include: a six-speed automatic gearbox (120i, 120d); leather upholstery; business and professional navigation (with TMC) and iDrive controller/folding screen; front and rear park distance control; sports seats; HiFi speaker system; Professional HiFi with Logic7.
The 1-Series is being launched with four engines, two petrol and two diesel.

Inevitably there are rumours about how this engine range may be enlarged, but BMW is tight-lipped at this stage. Six-cylinder engines will fit in the engine bay, and it would be surprising if this potential wasn't realised at some point.
A hot M version has also been mooted, but if it happens it is likely to be some time away, perhaps as much as three years. For now BMW is concentrating on the volume sellers.
